Explore Honolulu Zoo: A Must-Visit for Travelers in Waikiki
Even those of us who live in Hawaii on the island of Oahu sometimes visit the Honolulu Zoo to see what’s new and to remind us that there are some amazing animals (holoholona – pronounced ho-lo-ho-LOH-nah in Hawaiian) in the world we don’t see here in the rainforests of Hawaii!
The Honolulu Zoo started as Queen Kapi’olani Park near Diamond Head Volcano in 1877.
In 1947, just over 42 acres within Kapi`olani Park were designated for the Honolulu Zoo.
Over time it grew into a larger zoo with over 900 animals and more than 100 species.
Many travelers plan a half-day visit for something relaxing to do. If you or someone in your crew is excited to see Komodo dragons, elephants, giraffes, orangutans, primates, birds, and reptiles – book a ride and get there early!
